The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has disbursed ₦5 billion in scholarships to 30,000 students from the Northwest geopolitical zone.
The Independent Mirror reports that the disbursement took place on Friday at the newly established Federal University of Education, Zaria, as part of the Speaker’s commitment to youth empowerment and educational development.
The beneficiaries—drawn from Jigawa, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kano, and Katsina states—received scholarships ranging from ₦200,000 to ₦800,000.
The initiative aims to promote education as a tool for regional and national development.
“In just a few days after empowering my constituents with 117 vehicles, 200 tricycles, and 1,000 motorcycles, I again witnessed history being made,” Speaker Abbas said.
“With deep gratitude to the Almighty and immense pride in the resilience of our youth, I disbursed ₦5 billion in scholarships to 30,000 students across the North-West.
These scholarships are not just financial aid, they are investments in dreams, engines for progress, and a resounding declaration that education is the future of this region—and of Nigeria.”
The Speaker described the emotional scenes as students received their alerts, stating: “This is what public service should feel like—impactful and transformational.”
The event was attended by prominent figures from Kaduna State and the Northwest, including representatives of Governor Uba Sani.
Speaker Abbas emphasized the importance of prioritizing critical fields such as Medicine, Engineering, Law, and Technology to meet the country’s growing needs.
He also announced plans to establish a modern orphanage in Zaria, describing it as a “sanctuary of love, education, and care for our most vulnerable children.”
Education, Abbas said, remains his life’s mission. He highlighted his sponsorship of 8,000 students for WAEC, NECO, and JAMB examinations, as well as the ₦80 billion Education Village project in Zaria.
These efforts, he noted, are being replicated across Nigeria—from Kaduna to Bayelsa, Imo, Kwara, and Ondo.
He concluded with a promise: “I will never stop working for the Nigerian child.”
The Speaker also expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani for their unwavering support for his constituents, the Northwest region, and Nigeria at large.
