The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will usher in a new era of financial rewards from the 2026/27 season, with the league champions set to receive a record-breaking N1 billion prize money.

The Independent Mirror reports that the unprecedented reward package was approved during a joint meeting between the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Under the newly approved structure, the league winners will pocket N1 billion, while the second-placed team will earn N500 million. The third-placed side will receive N300 million.

The initiative is widely regarded as a major milestone in the development of Nigerian domestic football, reflecting the commitment of football stakeholders to improve the league’s attractiveness and competitiveness.

The enhanced prize money is expected to encourage greater investment in clubs, improve player welfare, and raise the overall quality of competition across the NPFL.

Football administrators believe the move will also strengthen the commercial appeal of the league and create a more sustainable environment for clubs competing in Nigeria’s top division.

The new reward system represents the largest prize fund ever introduced in the history of the NPFL and is expected to take effect from the commencement of the 2026/27 season.

Additional details regarding the implementation and operational framework of the prize structure are expected to be released by the relevant authorities in due course.
