The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has awarded full scholarships to 1,000 students worth over ₦800,000 to each of them to study at Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Federal University, Dutsinma.
The Independent Mirror reports that Speaking at the launch of the scholarship programme at Bayero University in Kano on Saturday, Barau said it is aimed at addressing educational financial challenges faced by youths and providing them with access to quality education.
Barau, represented by Sen. Kawu Sumaila, emphasised that education is his top priority, adding that the initiative reflects his commitment to securing Nigeria’s future through educated and empowered young people.
He urged the beneficiaries to seize the opportunity and reminded them that the scholarship is not just financial assistance, but a call to service and excellence.
Senator Kawu Sumaila also supported each beneficiary with ₦20,000 as transport fare.
The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Atah, commended the initiative, calling it an exemplary act of public service and appealing to others to emulate the gesture.
The Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Prof. Haruna Musa, who lauded the intervention, said it was timely and transformative.
Two of the beneficiaries, Fathiyya Musa and Hauwa Abubakar Ibrahim, expressed gratitude and pledged to make the most use of the opportunity.
The programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on improving infrastructure, healthcare, education, economic growth, and national security.
During the event, the Kano South Students Association (KASOSA) and Kano Central Students Association (KACESA) presented an award of excellence in recognition of my efforts to support education and establish the FUDMA Study Centres in their various senatorial districts.
Among the dignitaries who graced the occasion are the Minister for State Housing and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, representative of the state Minister of the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure.
Others Managing Director of the North West Development Commission (NWDC), Professor Abdullahi Shehu Maaji, Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Professor Haruna Musa, former Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, academicians, party leaders, among others.
