To His Excellency,
The Executive Governor of Kano State
Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf
We, the concerned citizens of Kano State, write to bring to your attention a pressing matter that requires immediate action. As you may be aware, our state is currently experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures soaring to record highs.
While we commend your administration’s efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change through the launch of the 2.5 million trees initiative, we are alarmed by the current indiscriminate cutting down of trees in Kano School of Nursing, Infectious Diseases Hospital, Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Yadakunya General Hospital (popularly known as Bela Leprosy Hospital) among others under the care of the Kano State Ministry of Health.
These trees not only provide shade and reduce the urban heat island effect but also serve as a natural barrier against pollution, improve air quality, and support biodiversity. Their destruction will only exacerbate the heatwave’s impact on our communities, particularly the most vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
We urge you to take immediate action to:
1. Stop the indiscriminate cutting down of trees in hospitals and schools.
2. Conduct an investigation into the matter and hold those responsible accountable.
3. Develop and implement a comprehensive tree conservation and planting plan, prioritizing areas with high population density and vulnerability to heat stress.
We commend your administration’s efforts to address environmental issues and promote sustainability. The 2.5 million trees initiative is a laudable project that will have a lasting impact on our state’s ecosystem. However, we must ensure that our actions are consistent and do not undermine our progress.
We look forward to your prompt response and action on this critical matter.
Thank you for your dedication to the well-being of Kano State and its citizens.
Sincerely,
Ismail Auwal
