The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has announced his resignation from office.
The Independent Mirror reports that Gusau made the announcement during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.
His resignation comes amid growing criticism of football administration in Nigeria, following recent setbacks suffered by the country’s national teams, particularly the Super Eagles and Super Falcons, who both failed to qualify for the World Cup.
What Next? Normalisation Committee
Following Gusau’s resignation, attention has now shifted to the possibility of setting up a Normalisation Committee to oversee the affairs of the NFF.
However, there appears to be disagreement among chieftains of the National Sports Commission (NSC) over who should be appointed chairman of the proposed committee.
Reports indicate that NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Bukola Olopade, are reportedly at odds over who should head the Normalisation Committee.
According to a source who spoke to the Independent Mirror on condition of anonymity, Mallam Dikko is said to prefer Musa Ahmadu, while Olopade reportedly favours former NFF President Amaju Pinnick to chair the committee.
“We’ve seen this movie before. When administrators fight, players suffer, sponsors run, and FIFA starts asking questions,” the source said.
The proposed Normalisation Committee is expected to take charge of the NFF for a period of three months.
For now, the major questions are who will emerge as chairman of the NFF Normalisation Committee and when the next NFF general election will be held.
The developments have left football stakeholders waiting anxiously for clarity on the next steps for Nigerian football.
