Senator Kawu Sumaila Commends Gov. Yusuf on Local Government Autonomy

by Ahmad Hamisu Gwale

The Senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Suleiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, OFR, PhD, has commended the Kano State Government for transmitting a bill that grants full financial and administrative autonomy to the state’s 44 local government councils, describing it as a vindication of the struggle he initiated at the national level.

The Independent Mirror reports that this was contained in a statement signed by Abbas Adam Abbas, Senior Special Adviser to the Senator on Media and Publicity, on Friday.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf gave his approval for the landmark bill while presiding over the 31st Executive Council meeting at the Government House Annex in Kwankwasiyya City.

The Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed the development in an official statement, noting that the bill will now be transmitted to the State House of Assembly for legislative consideration.

On May 15, 2024, Senator Kawu moved a historic motion at the Nigerian Senate calling for the restoration of local government autonomy—a process later reinforced by a court ruling under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which secured independence for local councils nationwide.

Reacting to Kano’s formal adoption of the reform, Senator Kawu said the development proves the correctness of his position that local government autonomy is vital for democracy, grassroots development, and accountability.

“This is a victory for democracy and for the Nigerian people. What began in the Senate chamber and was defended in the courts is now a reality at the state level. I feel vindicated to see Kano join in implementing true local government autonomy,” Senator Kawu stated.

He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing democratic reforms that empower citizens and strengthen governance across Nigeria.
