President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has removed the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, from his position, according to sources within top security circles and the Police Service Commission.
The Independent Mirror reports that Egbetokun was directed to prepare his handover notes following a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa.
He is expected to formally hand over in the coming days.
According to the sources, Tunji Disu has been appointed as the new Inspector-General of Police.
Before this appointment, Disu served as the Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Alagbon, Lagos State.
Some reports indicate that the former police chief was advised to step down to focus on his health.
It was also gathered that some police officers have expressed support for the leadership change.
As of now, no official statement has been released outlining the specific reasons for the decision.
However, the newly appointed police chief is expected to assume office immediately.
