The Kano State Government has officially flagged off the Torch of Unity Movement ahead of the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, scheduled to take place in Ogun State.
The Independent Mirror reports that the flagging off of the torch symbolizes a strong commitment to promoting peace and unity in the build-up to the festival, particularly among the state’s contingent.
The Secretary to the Kano State Government, Umar Farouk, alongside the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other top government officials, attended the event.
The 2025 National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games, will be hosted in Ogun State from May 16 to May 30.
Speaking at the event, Secretary to the State Government Umar Farouk described the Torch of Unity as a symbol of peace and strength.
He emphasized that enhanced collaboration is essential to advancing the nation’s sporting potential and ensuring Kano remains a dominant force in national and international sports.
He further assured that the Kano State Government will fully support its athletes, providing all necessary resources to help them win medals and prepare effectively to showcase their talents during the tournament.
The Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Ibrahim Umar Fagge, described the National Sports Festival as Kano’s version of the Olympics, stating that the commission is committed to ensuring the participation of the state’s best athletes.
He also commended the Kano State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and all stakeholders for their efforts toward the success of the forthcoming festival.
The flag-off ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth and Sports, Sani Musa Danja, and other notable officials.
