A two-day capacity-building retreat for members of the Kano Online Media Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists kicked off in Jigawa State.
The retreat, organised by the Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs in collaboration with the Kano NUJ State Council, is themed “Strengthening Digital Journalism through Ethical Practice and Responsible Online Engagement.”
In his welcome address, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, Chairman of the Kano Online Media Chapel, described the retreat as timely, noting that digital journalism plays a critical role in information dissemination and public accountability.
He urged participants to uphold professionalism, accuracy, and ethical standards in their online reporting.
Comrade Sulaiman Dederi, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kano State Council, commended the state government for supporting journalists through capacity building. He encouraged online journalists to adopt responsible engagement and avoid spreading misinformation.
The retreat was officially opened by Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, who delivered the keynote address. He emphasised the importance of ethical digital journalism in promoting good governance and sustainable development in Kano State, assuring continued government support for media development.
Experts presented papers on topics including online journalism for sustainable development, global best practices in digital journalism, techniques of language use in multimedia journalism, and monetization strategies for sustainable online journalism.
The retreat concluded with a vote of thanks by Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Usman Bello.
