Families of three men allegedly killed by suspected political thugs in Kano State have demanded justice and called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to intervene in the investigation.
The Independent Mirror reports that the victims were allegedly attacked around the Kano Medical Centre on Race Course Road and at other locations in the state.
The families accused the authorities of releasing suspects arrested in connection with the killings despite alleged eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage said to have captured the incident.
Parents, relatives, and hundreds of neighbours gathered in Kano on Wednesday to demand justice for their sons—Nura Usman, Albashir Tukur, and Abba—who were allegedly killed in broad daylight on May 5 by suspected political thugs.
They called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the National Human Rights Commission, and other relevant authorities to intervene and ensure a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation.
The grieving families accused the authorities of releasing suspects initially arrested in connection with the killings and lamented the slow pace of the investigation.
The victims were reportedly attacked during the swearing-in ceremony of the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Murtala Sule Garo, around the Kano Medical Centre on Race Course Road and at other locations within the state.
The emotional gathering, marked by tears and chants for justice, saw the families recount how they had closely followed the case from the beginning, only to later discover that those arrested had been released and were now moving freely within the community.
Addressing journalists alongside other family members and neighbours, Malam Nasiru Usman Idris said eyewitness accounts and available evidence indicate that the victims were stabbed multiple times, resulting in their deaths.
The families also referred to CCTV footage of the incident, which circulated widely on social media and allegedly captured the killings of their children.
They identified the suspects as Nazifi Nanaso, Mai Daudu, Rabi’u Farar Gafiya, Suda, Manniru Kanabaro, and Daba-Daba, expressing outrage that no decisive action has been taken despite what they described as clear evidence and eyewitness identification.
“We have been following this case step by step, hoping justice will be done. But to our shock, those arrested were later released. Since then, nothing meaningful has happened,” Malam Nasiru said.
In an emotional moment during the press conference, the mother of one of the victims broke down in tears as she appealed for justice.
“We have lost our child, and since that day, our lives have never been the same. All we are asking for is justice. Let those who killed our children be held accountable. We will not stop crying out until justice is done,” she said.
The families also raised concerns about alleged interference in the investigation, claiming that influential individuals, including a senior federal government official, may be shielding the suspects—a development they say has eroded their confidence in the process.
They further lamented that, more than two months after the killings, witnesses who reportedly identified the suspects at the Kano State Police Command Headquarters have yet to see any concrete action taken.
In a joint appeal, the families again called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the National Human Rights Commission, and other relevant authorities to intervene and ensure a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation.
“We seek nothing more than justice for our children. As they lie in their graves, we pray that the rule of law will prevail and that justice is served without fear or favour.”
