The AGILE Kano Project is making strides in improving the quality and access to education for young adolescent girls in rural areas.
The Independent Mirror reported that the project coordinator, Nasir Abdullahi Kwalli, made this known during an interview with journalists in Kano.
Nasir Kwalli said the main objectives of the program are to address the persistent problems bedeviling secondary schools, especially for girls, who often face barriers such as inadequate schools, infrastructures, water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
“If you really want to fast-track development in the society, you have to start by educating young girls because they are the mothers of tomorrow. When you have a large number of educated girls, it will be easier to disseminate knowledge.”
To achieve this goal, the AGILE Kano Project has embarked on direct interventions such as building brand new junior and senior secondary schools across rural areas of Kano, providing access to water and building toilets for girls in the secondary schools, and giving schools grants to repair their dilapidated infrastructures.
According to Kwalli, the project has so far renovated 1,228 secondary schools and is still counting.
He also said that about 1,269,673 students have directly benefited from the AGILE renovation and expansion intervention.
“There is no single community in Kano that you cannot find AGILE project, and this is just the beginning. This is just a little, more and more are coming soon,” he added.
The AGILE Kano Project is funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Kano State Ministry of Education in collaboration with other stakeholders.
The project aims to increase equitable access to secondary education and enhance quality and accountability in secondary schools in Kano State.
