As the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League season concludes successfullythe story of the league cannot be told without acknowledging the defining role of its Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye At a time when Nigerian domestic football faced questions of credibility, financial instability, and declining fan confidence, his leadership offered a clear departure from business as usual.
Under his watch, the NPFL raised the champions’ prize money to ₦200 million and ensured timely disbursement to clubs.
Beyond finances, his board enforced stricter club licensing, improved stadium security standards, and introduced consistent disciplinary measures that reduced match abandonments and restored a measure of order to match days.
These changes reflect what Prof. Stephen Frawley, a scholar of sport management, describes as the shift from ad-hoc administration to strategic governance in sport, where long-term value is prioritized over short-term survival.
Hon. Elegbeleye’s tenure embodied that shift. He treated the league not as a political patronage platform, but as an institution whose brand, integrity, and financial health had to be protected.
His defense of the NPFL’s identity further illustrated this principle. When third parties attempted to exploit the league’s name for unauthorized awards, he responded with legal clarity and public accountability.
As Prof. Roger Pielke Jr. , a leading voice on sport and public policy, argues,The credibility of sport institutions rests on their ability to enforce rules impartially and protect their assets from exploitation.
In doing so, Hon. Elegbeleye safeguarded the collective value of the 20 clubs and thousands of stakeholders who depend on the league.
Now, that same record of delivery has earned him renewed public trust. His victory in the All Progressives Congress senatorial primaryfor his senatorial district is not just a personal achievement; it is an affirmation that Nigerians are willing to support leaders with a proven record of reform and results.
This aligns with the observation of James MacGregor Burns, scholar of leadership, who wrote:
Transforming leadership occurs when one or more persons engage with others in such a way that leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality.by raising the standards of the NPFL, Hon. Elegbeleye raised expectations for what public service can look like.
To Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, we commend your stewardship of Nigerian football during a critical period and congratulate you on your victory at the APC primary.
You have demonstrated that with vision, discipline, and accountability, it is possible to restore confidence in public institutions.
The NPFL you leave behind is more credible, more competitive, and more attractive to investors and fans alike.
May your transition to the national legislature carry forward the same spirit of reform and service that has defined your time at the league. Nigerian football and your constituency are better for it.
