NSC Chairman, Barau FC, SWAN, Kano Pillars Mourn the Death of Abba Yola

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has described the demise of former Kano Pillars Chairman, Alhaji Abba Abdullahi Yola, as a painful loss to the Nigerian sports community.

The Independent Mirror reports that in a statement issued by Kehinde Ajayi, Director of Press, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Abba Yola, whom he described as a personal friend.

“Alhaji Abba Yola was a sports administrator par excellence who contributed immensely to the growth of Nigerian sports during his time at the Sports Commission and later at the Ministry of Sports,” said Shehu Dikko.

Alhaji Abba Yola, a renowned sports administrator, passed away on Friday, 20th June 2025, after a prolonged illness.

The Kano-born icon served as a retired Assistant Director at the Federal Ministry of Sports and was also the Chief of Staff to the former Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare.

In a related development, Barau Football Club has also expressed deep sorrow over Yola’s passing.

In a statement signed by Ahmad Hamisu Gwale, the club’s Media Officer, Barau FC Chairman Ambassador Ibrahim Shitu Chanji described the late Abba Yola as a dedicated and impactful figure in Nigerian sports.

“The entire Barau FC family, management, technical crew, players, staff, and supporters — extend heartfelt condolences to his family, the Government and people of Kano State, and the wider Nigerian sports fraternity,” the statement read.

Similarly, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano State Chapter, has extended its deepest condolences to the family, the Kano State Government, and the entire Nigerian sports community.

In a statement signed by the Assistant Secretary, Muzammil Dalha Yola, SWAN Kano State Chairman, Comrade Zahraddeen Sale, described Abba Yola as a father figure, role model, mentor, and gentleman who made significant impacts in various spheres of life.

“On behalf of all SWAN members in Kano State, we pray to Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. May Allah also grant his family the strength to bear this irreparable loss. Ameen,” the statement concluded.

Kano Pillars Football Club has also confirmed the passing of its former Chairman, Alhaji Abba Abdullahi Yola, noting his invaluable contributions during a transformative period for the club.

Under his leadership, Kano Pillars FC witnessed competitive growth and organizational stability, solidifying its status as one of Nigeria’s premier football clubs.

May Allah (SWT) grant him Aljannatul Firdaus and comfort his loved ones during this difficult time.
