The Council and Management of Northwest University, Kano, have conferred honorary doctorate degrees on five distinguished Nigerians in recognition of their outstanding contributions to education, entrepreneurship, and national development.

The Independent Mirror reports that the honours were awarded during the university’s second combined convocation ceremony, which brought together dignitaries, academics, traditional rulers, students, and parents to celebrate excellence, leadership, and service.

Among the honourees was former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, FNSE, who received an Honorary Doctorate in Education (Honoris Causa) for his visionary leadership in founding the university and implementing far-reaching educational reforms in Kano State.

His initiatives include the establishment of hundreds of secondary schools, vocational centres, and scholarship schemes that have benefited thousands of students both locally and internationally.

Also honoured was the late elder statesman and business mogul, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, who was posthumously awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities in recognition of his lifelong philanthropy, promotion of Islamic education, and contributions to commerce and social development.

Hajiya Mariya Sunusi Dantata was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities for her advocacy for girl-child education and humanitarian efforts.

In the entrepreneurship category, Alhaji Aliyu Sa’adu Bebeji and Alhaji Adamu Yahaya Maikifi received Honorary Doctorates for their outstanding achievements in business and job creation across Kano State and beyond.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf commended the awardees for their enduring legacies and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalizing educational institutions in the state.

Governor Yusuf revealed that he personally funded the construction of parts of the university’s staff quarters during his tenure as Commissioner of Works under the Kwankwaso administration.

“Because of my zeal to ensure Northwest University became a reality, I used my personal resources to construct some parts of the university,” he stated.

He added that several abandoned projects on the university campus have now resumed, and the state currently spends over ₦423 million monthly on staff salaries.

He also highlighted that the 2025 state budget allocates 31.1% to education—surpassing the UNESCO benchmark.

The convocation ceremony also marked the official restoration of the university’s original name—Northwest University—and served as a reminder of how vision, dedication, and investment in education can shape the future of generations to come.
