Federal Lawmaker Kabiru Rurum Mourns death of 22 Kano Athletes

Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, Member of the House of Representatives for Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency, expressed sadness over the accident that killed 22 athletes from the Kano team. 

The Independent Mirror reports that the athletes were returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival, known as ‘Gateway Games 2024’, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In a statement released in Kano, Rurum stated that “It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that I, Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, Member of the House of Representatives for Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency, mourn the tragic loss of 22 young athletes from Kano State who lost their lives in a fatal road accident”

These young men were returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival—popularly known as the Gateway Games 2024—held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when this unfortunate incident occurred. Their journey, which began with hope and pride as they represented our great state and nation, ended in unimaginable grief,”

“The athletes we lost were not just sportsmen—they were among the brightest talents Kano had to offer. Their dreams, passion, and commitment to excellence embodied the true spirit of Nigeria’s youth.

Their untimely deaths are a painful blow, not only to their families and the people of Kano State, but to the entire nation. Nigeria has lost future champions, leaders, and role models.

“At this difficult moment, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Kano State Government, and the Nigerian sports community. I also pray for the quick recovery of those who sustained injuries in the accident.

May Allah (SWT) grant the deceased eternal rest and give their families the strength to bear this great loss.

This tragedy is a painful reminder of the urgent need to prioritize road safety in our country. We must take concrete steps to prevent such needless loss of life. I call on relevant authorities at both federal and state levels to intensify efforts towards improving transport safety, enforcing regulations, and ensuring that those who travel on our roads are protected”,

Rurum concluded with saying”Our fallen athletes may be gone, but their spirit, dedication, and love for sport will never be forgotten.
