BREAKING: Ex-VP Atiku Abubakar Resigns from PDP

by Ahmad Hamisu Gwale

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, the very platform that brought him to national prominence and which he helped to build over two decades ago.

The Independent Mirror reports in a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP’s Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and a deep sense of disillusionment with the party’s direction as the reasons behind his decision.

“It is with a heavy heart that I write to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” he wrote.

“As one of the founding fathers of this great party, this decision is not an easy one. But the values we once held dear have been eroded beyond recognition.

Atiku, who served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under the PDP and contested the presidency twice under its banner in 2019 and 2023, reflected on his journey with a mix of gratitude and disappointment.

The letter was acknowledged by the ward chairman, Hammadama Abubakar, on the same day.
