Ahead of the Africa Cup Nations in the Côte d’Ivoire, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has already settled on searching for a new coach for the Super Eagles.

The Independent Mirror reported that Jose Peseiro, the head coach of the team, will be given an extension if the team goes all the way to the final in the AFCON.

Otherwise, then his contact won’t be extended upon expiration after the tournament schedule from January to February 2024.

The three-time African champions earned just two points from their opening two games against minnows Lesotho and Zimbabwe in the World Cup 2026 Qualifier.

Portugal-based Peseiro was appointed on May 15, 2022, but in the last 14 games, the Eagles have won only six, drawn three and lost five matches.

But a month ago, NFF admitted that Peseiro does not have the quality to lead the Super Eagles to an AFCON victory, judging by his experience and track record, the stuation that threatens his job.

The Independent Mirror can exclusively reveal that the Nigeria Football Federation Chairman committee technical Director Dr. Sharif Rabiu Inuwa Ahlan said the NFF had been considering the local coach to replace Jose Peseiro.

The former Enugu Rangers, Kano Pillars, CHAN Eagles, Interim Head Coach Salisu Yusuf D Black may replace Jose Peseiro as head coach of the Super Eagles because he has vast experience of leading the Eagles to glory.

Football-loving fans, on the other hand, are also saying Yusuf is capable of meeting the expectations of Nigerians in bringing back the old glory days ahead of the 2024 AFCON come January next year.

It is recalled that in 2009, the NFF employed Yusuf as assistant coach to Samson Siasia, who was serving as the head coach of the Nigeria national football team.

Yusuf was still working with Siasia when Kano Pillars appointed him as technical adviser in 2010, a move that saw the club qualify for the 2010 CAF Champions League.
