The Tinubu-Abba Youth Development Cup 2026, a football tournament named in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially kicked off in Kano State.
The Independent Mirror reports that the tournament began on Friday and was attended by key stakeholders in Kano State. In the opening match played at Mahaha Sports Complex, Kofar Na’isa, Gwale United FC defeated Kano Municipal FC 2–1.
The tournament is organised and sponsored by Hon. Aminu Mukhtar Dan’Amu, Executive Director of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), with the aim of discovering and promoting young football talents.
Speaking during the opening ceremony at the Mahaha Sports Complex on Friday, Dan’Amu described sports as a powerful tool for uniting young people and promoting peaceful coexistence.
He also expressed his desire to expand the competition next year from the Kano Metropolitan area to all 44 local government areas of Kano State.
He noted that the tournament will also serve as a key platform for promoting talented young players for European trials, reaffirming his commitment to youth and sports development.
Dan’Amu a former Kano State Commissioner for Finance, further stated that the tournament forms part of activities aimed at mobilising support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Tinubu-Abba Youth Development Cup 2026 features 16 clubs from the Kano Metropolitan area, with the opening fixtures attracting a large turnout of football fans and residents.
