The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has assured that the Federal Government’s plan to streamline university degrees and the Higher National Diploma (HND) awarded by polytechnics will not affect the Nigeria Polytechnics Games (NIPOGA).
The Independent Mirror reports that, Alausa made this known on Saturday during the opening ceremony of the 22nd Nigeria Polytechnics Games, themed “Ijakadi 2025,” held at the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State.
His speech was delivered by the Director of Polytechnic and Allied Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Ejeh Usman.
He stated, “NIPOGA will continue despite the Federal Government’s plans to streamline education in the country. We will still have polytechnics.
What the Federal Government is saying concerns polytechnics that wish to award degrees. The FG hasn’t cancelled polytechnics. Therefore, NIPOGA will continue.”
He explained that polytechnics interested in awarding degrees could apply for accreditation. “If they are accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), they can operate a dual mandate,” he added.
Dr. Ejeh also conveyed the minister’s satisfaction with the organization of the NIPOGA Games in Offa, affirming the government’s support for the event.
“The minister’s message is to encourage all participating schools, rectors, and stakeholders. This initiative is laudable.
The Ministry supports the promotion of sports in education. Education without games is incomplete — sports and education go hand in hand,” he said.
The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Dr. Kadiri Kamoru, highlighted the institution’s achievements, including securing the hosting rights for the 22nd NIPOGA Games — a first in the institution’s over 30-year history.
He expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their support and leadership, describing the event as historic.
The games feature 12 sports and over 5,000 participants, with nationwide broadcast coverage aimed at showcasing Nigeria’s sporting talent.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Alhaji Moshood Ojikutu, and the Senator representing Kwara South Senatorial District, Senator Lola Ashiru, noted that the sporting event helps foster unity among Nigerian youths.
