The House of Representatives has called for increased budgetary allocation to the sports sector to fast-track the achievement of Nigeria’s sports development objectives.

The Independent Mirror reports that during the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) 2026 budget defence, members of the House Committee urged greater funding to enhance sports development across the country.

The lawmakers also commended the NSC for its prudent utilisation of resources and the visible improvements recorded in the sports sector.

They noted that both the approval and diligent implementation of budgetary provisions remain critical to sustaining progress.

While presenting the Commission’s proposal, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, outlined plans to consolidate recent gains through strategic investments in infrastructure and sports development.

“We are building on a foundation to Reset, Refocus, and Relaunch our sports sector. It is built on transparency and measurable results,” Dikko said.

He noted that the 2026 budget proposal prioritises key areas, including infrastructure renewal, youth talent development, and strengthening the sports economy.

Dikko added that the Commission is collaborating with state governments, including Bayelsa, Kaduna, and Sokoto, among others, to remodel and upgrade existing facilities to meet global standards.
