Northwest University, Kano, has announced an increase in school fees for returning undergraduate students of the institution.
The Independent Mirror reports that the increment was confirmed dated Sunday, June 1, 2025, by the university’s Information & Communication Technology Directorate (ICT).
The university stated that the fee hike affects central registration, administrative charges, and hostel maintenance fees for undergraduate students.
The invoice form titled “Northwest University, Kano, Muhammadu Buhari Way – Registration Charges Assessment Invoice for 2024/2025, Level: 400 Student”, outlined the new payment process. It instructs students to make payments through the university portal by following these steps:
1. Click on the “Make Payment” button
2. Choose a preferred payment method – Card Payment, USSD, or Account Transfer
3. Click “Proceed with Payment” to complete the transaction
The invoice further advises all returning students to confirm their examination results before proceeding with payment.
Under the revised structure, returning undergraduate students in the Faculty of Accounting (BSc) will pay over ₦50,000 in fees — among the highest in the institution.
This development comes despite the Kano State Government’s recent decision to reduce registration fees by 50% for indigenes studying in state-owned tertiary institutions, including universities and other higher education institutions in the state.
Announcing the decision, the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Kofar-Mata, said the government implemented the reduction in response to the economic hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidies.
In reaction to the new fee hike, students of Northwest University, Kano, are calling on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to intervene and reverse the recent increment in school fees for returning undergraduate students.
