The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has appointed Haruna Ibrahim Kakangi as the new Editor of its Hausa Service.
The Independent Mirror reports that the appointment was announced at about 3:30 p.m. on Friday by Juliet Njeri, Head of BBC Africa, in a message to BBC staff.
According to Njeri, Kakangi emerged as the successful candidate after two rounds of selection and will serve as Editor of the service for one year.
His appointment comes about a year after the departure of the service’s former Editor, Aliyu Tanko, who resigned from the position in August 2025 after serving as Editor of BBC Hausa since 2020.
Tanko’s resignation came amid reports of allegations of bullying and staff maltreatment, as well as an internal BBC investigation.
However, Tanko said at the time that he resigned on personal grounds and denied that his departure was connected to the allegations.
Kakangi, an indigene of Kaduna State, holds a degree in Hausa Language from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, which he obtained in 2008, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the same university in 2019.
He previously worked with BBC Media Action before joining Radio France Internationale (RFI) Hausa.
He later returned to the BBC in 2017 after his application to join the organisation was successful, becoming a staff member of the BBC Hausa Service.
After joining the BBC, Kakangi worked as a Senior Journalist on a joint BBC and MacArthur Foundation project.
He subsequently became Head of Social Media for BBC Hausa, where he was responsible for overseeing the service’s activities across various digital platforms.
Kakangi also underwent a two-month professional training programme at the World Press Institute in the United States, further strengthening his experience in news reporting and other areas of journalism.
His appointment marks another significant step in his career at the BBC and places him at the helm of one of the organisation’s major African-language services, which serves millions of Hausa-speaking audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
