The Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs has opened a two-day capacity-building workshop aimed at equipping Local Government Information Officers with strategic communication skills to promote healthy dietary habits and curb the rising incidence of diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across the state.

The Independent Mirror reports that the two-day workshop, tagged “Promoting Healthy Dietary Practices and Reducing the Incidence of Diet-Related Non-Communicable Diseases in Kano State,” is designed to foster better public awareness and engagement.

Speaking on the first day of the event, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, described the workshop as a timely intervention to address the growing threat of NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, which he noted are becoming increasingly prevalent not only in urban centres but also in rural communities.

Waiya assured the officers that the state government will soon fulfill its earlier promise, particularly regarding the provision of modern working tools aimed at ensuring timely and accurate information dissemination.

The Commissioner also commended the Nutrition Society of Nigeria for curating a well-structured programme that blends essential nutrition knowledge with modules designed to enhance the communication and public enlightenment capacities of the officers.

He further expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering support, visionary leadership, and belief in the transformative power of information and public engagement.

The workshop was attended by Information Officers from the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State, as well as experts in food and nutrition, among others.
