Ahead of the 2nd edition of the National Para Games 2023 scheduled to take place from Friday, 8th to15th December 2023 in Abuja, the lack of funds from the Kano State Sports Commission has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the participation of the Kano State contingent in this prestigious event.

The Independent Mirror reported that up to now there is no reason for the unnecessary financial support from the Kano State Government.

Because of this, Kano may miss out on the games, which would not only discourage them but also have a negative impact on their overall development as athletes.

In light of these challenges, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano State Chapter, has made a clarion call to the state government to rescue the situation.

The association made the call to Muhammad Nur Tijjani, the State Secretary For SWAN, on behalf of the Chairman of SWAN Kano State Chapter.

SWAN urged the government to intervene and provide the necessary funds to ensure the participation of Kano State Para athletes in the upcoming Para Games. SWAN recognizes the importance of the games for the development and recognition of para athletes and believes that the government’s support is crucial to their success.

The participation of Kano State para athletes in the Para Games is not only a matter of pride but also an opportunity for them to compete at a national level and further their careers. It is a chance for these athletes to showcase their abilities, inspire others, and bring glory to their state.

Therefore, the call from SWAN Kano State Chapter to the state government is a plea to recognize the significance of supporting these aspiring para-athletes and providing them with the necessary financial assistance. This would not only discourage and negatively affect the para-athletes but also hinder their overall development.

Subsequently, SWAN Kano State Chapter has appealed to the state government to allocate funds and ensure the participation of these athletes in the para games, as it is vital for their growth, recognition, and success as athletes.

As at the moment of compiling this report, the investigation revealed that Kano State Contingent are still in Kano awaiting the Sports Commission to convene them to Abuja. And one official of the Sports Commission confirmed on the condition of anonymity that up to this moment, the state government did not release a single kobo to the commission for this important event.

The Para Games is a prestigious event dedicated to showcasing the talents and skills of athletes with disabilities. These games provide a platform for para athletes to excel at their respective levels. It is an opportunity for these athletes to showcase their dedication, hard work, and determination, while also promoting inclusivity and breaking down barriers.
