A 300-level student of the Geography Department at the Federal University of Gashua (FUGA) in Yobe State, Shamsiya Murtala, has lost her life in a fire incident at a female hostel of the university on Saturday.
The Independent Mirror reported that three other students who sustained injuries were treated and discharged from the general hospital, Gashua.
It was gathered that when the fire started at the room of the victim, she was asleep, hence it took the effort of the other students in the hostel to break into her room and bring her out.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maimuna Waziri, expressed sadness and sympathy to the affected students and their families over the unfortunate incident.
Waziri has ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire.
Similarly, the VC directed the immediate closure of the university due to escalating students unrest on campus.
This was contained in a statement signed by the University’s Registrar, Dr. Abubakar Mamuda.
The statement directed all students to vacate the campus with immediate effect untill further notice.
