Deputy President of the Senate, Dr. Barau I. Jibrin, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for renaming the Federal University of Education, Kano, to Yusuf Maitama Sule University of Education, Kano.
The Independent Mirror reports that Barau Jibrin, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Ismail Mudashir, thanked President Tinubu for granting the request of the generality of the people of Kano State through him by renaming the university after the late northern icon, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Sule.
Barau Jibrin stated: “Thank you, Mr. President, for granting our request to rename the Federal University of Education, Kano, in honor of the elder statesman, Maitama Sule.”
“I wish to express our profound appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for approving the request of the people of Kano State through me by renaming the Federal University of Education, Kano, to Yusuf Maitama Sule University of Education, Kano.”
Maitama Sule, the Danmasanin Kano, was a diplomat, politician, and elder statesman who passed away in 2017 at the age of 88. He contributed immensely to Nigeria’s socio-political development.
In November last year, the Kano State Government reversed the renaming of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, to its former name, Northwest University, Kano.
To immortalize the late elder statesman, former Kano State Governor Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje had renamed Northwest University (owned by the state) as Yusuf Maitama Sule University.
“The NNPP-led Kano State Government’s decision to reverse the renaming of the state-owned university sparked controversy in Kano State. In response, Senator Barau Jibrin sponsored a bill to rename the Federal University of Education, Kano, after the late Danmasanin Kano” Barau stated.
Earlier, President Bola Tinubu officially approved the renaming of the Federal University of Education, Kano, to Yusuf Maitama Sule University of Education, Kano.
A statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, said Tinubu believes that immortalizing Ambassador Sule’s legacy will inspire younger generations to uphold integrity, patriotism, character, and nationalism.
The Federal University of Education, Kano, is one of seven specialized universities of education under the Federal Government.
